I haven't read this book yet but heard it was hilarious!

It's called: We're Just Like You, Only Prettier: Confessions of a Tarnished Southern Belle by Celia Rivenbark

When, for example, Rivenbark is confronted by the "Pre-School Nazis" and intimidating "granola moms" at her four-year-old's school, she admits asking her daughter to lie about what she had for breakfast (a foil-wrapped breakfast bar instead of the required "scrambled eggs, a bowl of real oatmeal-the kind you have to cook on top of the, uh, you know, stove-two slices of whole wheat toast and a glass of soy milk"). Rivenbark is a hoot, and her book will be best enjoyed while listening to the Allman Brothers Band and eating "a plate of, what else? collards and cornbread."

I Had To Do It

I've been reading this book since Wednesday night. It wasn't a horrible book, but it just wasn't holding my attention. I was having a hard time wanting to read it and when that happens, I know it's not a good thing. I like for every book I read to be my new favorite. It has to be fast moving and engaging and just.... GREAT for me to want to finish it. This one just didn't make the cut for me. So, 105 pages in, I put it down. The good news is that I bought it from Barnes & Noble less than a week ago and there's no evidence whatsoever that I've even opened it, so I'm going to return it today. :D



So, after that slow-moving, unmotivating read, I knew my next book needed to be by an author who never lets me down and always moves at a very brisk pace with short chapters (which I LOVE), so this is what I'm now reading...

I know it won't disappoint. :)

February's Book of the Month

Hey girls, I'm just doing this post so that everyone can respond in a comment about which book they'd like to nominate for our next book of the month.

Good Reads

Hey girls! I hope everyone has been having a great week!

Alynn and Tempie both suggested this great site to me when I was thinking of starting this book club and finally last night, I joined and I really like it! I like that you can add all the books of your "shelves" that you've read and review them and have friends, kinda like facebook. It's just a really neat site. You can also keep track of what you're currently reading and post an update whenever you want as to what page you're on. It's pretty cool. I thought it might be a nice companion to this, our book club! If you're there, please let us know! I know I'd love to add you as a friend on there to keep up with what you are reading and have read and all that stuff! ;)

I'm so new, though, I don't even know how to search for friends on there, so please tell me if you do. And Alynn, you have to tell me how you sent me that email last night. That was great and I'm so glad you sent it to me! :)

Also, don't forget to start thinking of what you want to suggest for next month's book of the month. I'd love to have each person suggest a book and then we all kind of vote for our pick. Whaddya think?

Hello, My Name is Candace, and I have a Problem...

So, after I just admitted that I have 50-some odd books on my shelves that are unread, I just ordered these two from B&N online.

Let me explain..

One of my favorite authors, Jennifer Weiner, just posted a blog (that I follow) and she posted about this book....
that she just finished reading. It sounded so good, so I looked it up at B&N to get more of an overview and it was rated 4 1/2 out of 5 stars!!!! So, I HAD to order it. Click the picture if you'd like to read the overview.

And then, I had to order another one (well, not really, but yeah.. ) to get the free shipping, so I gave in and ordered this one...

So, anyhow.... I probably have 60-some books to read now... *sigh*

Sundays at Tiffany's

This is a sweet, heart-tugging, quick little read all about true love. Totally gooey, sweet, and just a little sexy. I plowed through it in 2 days (I always do that when my hubby's out of town *sigh*sniff*). Jane's mother was a little to busy, too famous, too uninvolved. But Jane had her imaginary friend Michael to fill the void -- until he had to leave on her 9th birthday. But she never forgot him the way he said she would.

At 32 she's just as lonely, overpowered by her mother, but successful. Then she meets someone special (I'll bet you'll never guess who) and discovers true love and who she really is.

*sigh*

This is totally not the kind of book I think of when I think of the author, James Patterson, but a nice light read when you're in the mood for something romantic.

I am a newbie, and am SO excited about being a part of the Book Nook. Thanks, Candace:D....I must confess that although I LOVE a good book, the pressures of working (Dental Hygienist), my boys (ages 3 and 7), and keeping the house, laundry, church, PTA, singing, and cake-baking in check tend to snowball on me at times....I may get behind in the reading! ;( Hubby has yet to understand the impact a great book can have on a person; so he loves to give me a hard time if I've got my face in a book and he's "working" (yadda yadda). Oh, well; we're still madly in love, so I'll just roll my eyes (and curse) and do the best I can! I am about 1/4 way through The Help and LOVE it. These days I SO wish I had some "Help"; if I did I'd surely treat them better than those poor ladies. So far this book is breaking (and warming) my heart at the same time..... :)

The Memory Keeper's Daughter

This book is a few years old, so I'm sure at least one of you have possibly read it. If you have read it, I would love to know your thoughts. This one would've been great to read as a group because it is SO thought provoking.

In case you've never heard of this story, the basis is this... It's about Dr. David Henry and his wife, Norah. The book begins with her at the very end of her pregnancy in 1964 ( I loved that it was in 1964, because that's the year that The Help ended with, so I was still in that same frame of mind) and she goes into labor during a horrible blizzard. Well, being that it was 1964, she didn't know anything really about the baby she was carrying. And also, with the weather being what it was, her husband couldn't make it to the hospital for her to deliver, he had to go to his office, which was very near their house. His nurse made it in to help with the delivery, but her OB went into a ditch on the way there, so David ended up having to do the birthing himself. Well, also, in those days, they used gas to put the woman under so she wouldn't have to experience the awful pain of childbirth. The birth went fine and they had a perfect sweet little boy. Well, David was awaiting the afterbirth and the contractions got very intense again, and he realized that there was another baby coming. The second baby was a little girl and she had Down's Syndrome. His wife was still under and David made the decision to have his nurse take this baby to an institution thinking he was saving his family the pain of this child possibly having all kinds of health problems, which could lead to an early death. When Norah came to, he told her the second baby had died.

This book is about how this horrible secret tore at their lives and also about the nurse, Caroline, and this little girl, Phoebe.

It is so heart wrenching and such a worthy read.

There is only one thing I wish she had written differently, but honestly, if she had, it probably would've added another two to three hundred pages to this book and it's already a 400 pg book, so it's probably best that she took the story where she did. :)

I highly recommend it! :)
