Those Who Save Us

I started reading this book next since I already owned it. I'm on page 95 and I think it's pretty good so far. The book alternates between the story of mother Anna during WWII and the current story of her daughter Trudy and their difficult relationship. How is everyone liking the other book? I have it downloaded on my Kindle so I will moving on to it next.

  1. I bought this today at the airport in Dallas and read the first 130 pages while flying back home. I really like this one, which I'm so relieved about, because I hate to say this, but I didn't like either of the others. TGWTDT was just too much for me and every time I would try to pick it up to try reading it again, I felt like I was going to break out in hives. LOL.. that's just too much anxiety to have about reading something, so since I'm not going to be tested on it for a grade, I had to give it up.. then the other one, LTGWS was just booorrrriiinnng to me. I think it's just that I have too much going on that in order to read an entire book, it really has got to be something that pulls me in and makes me yearn for more. If it's just an average blah book, I don't have time for that. So, please forgive me for not finishing those two, but I promise, I will be finishing this one!!! :)

I really like it and I think the fact that I have a great interest in anything related to the Holocaust and World War II makes it all the more interesting for me! :)

  2. Okay, I just finished this one a minute ago and it was a really great book. I am very torn about it, though, because it's not one I would run out and recommend to everyone I know to read it, because it is a very dim, sad book. But I am so glad that I did read it. It's a remarkable story that was very well researched. I learned a lot about what happened in Holocaust era Germany that I didn't already know and I love that because I have such a huge interest in this time in our history. I would love to know what the rest of you guys think of it once you've read it.

  3. I'm on page 262. My only complaint so far is I am really missing the quotation marks. It took a little getting use to in the beginning because I would start reading something thinking they were just thinking the thought then realize they were actually saying it out loud. I wonder what makes someone write a book that way.

Candace, I read the part today of why the older lady was wearing an eye patch. How horrible was that.

  4. This is waiting for me at the library. I've been stalling to pick it up...they hold it for 2 weeks but once you pick it up you have 3 weeks only with it and no renewels...so I've been waiting to pick it up because I have a STACK waiting for me here. Currently, I'm reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks!! I'm only about 40 pages in, but so far so good :-) But, I can't wait to read this one too. Looks great!!

  5. I really liked this book in the beginning but it seemed to drag on towards the end. I would have liked to learn a little more about Jack & Anna's married life, how their marriage was after the Christmas incident. Also, I'm sure there was some meaning to it but I didn't really see the purpose of Trudy's relationship with Rainer. Like Candace said, I did learn some things from this book. I have mainly read about the Jewish side of WWII. I had never read anything about what the German women went through so this definitely gave me some incite.

  6. Erica, I would love to hear your thoughts when you are done with Henrietta Lacks. When I read it I had certain thoughts about it but then after meeting with my book club and discussing it my opinions on it changed.
