Oh my GOODNESS, girls!!! I am a little over a hundred pages into The Help and it's almost painful for me to put it down!
I know that Tempie has read it, I am reading it (obviously) and Erica is now reading it. Is anyone else?
I'm not going to give anything away, but these characters... I LOVE THEM!!! It's going to be really hard for me to say goodbye to these, I can already tell.
The only thing that I have to say is this...
I had NO IDEA that this kind of living was still occuring as recently as the 60's! I had no clue that "colored people" (as they call them in the book) were still practically slaves to white people then. I mean, they weren't slaves, as they were getting paid, so they were "The Help" but still... seperate bathrooms... within the same house? Come on! I can't believe it.
I love this story so much and I have to say.. I am LEARNING so much! I love it! :)
If you are reading it or have read it, I would love to know your thoughts on this as well....

Ok, I'm only a couple of pages into it and I LOVE it too!! Very good writing. You can literally hear the voices in the story. Can't wait to get back to it.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is shocking, but what's even more shocking is thinking that some people still believe this is how things should be. Disturbing.
I went to B and N after work today and got my copy. I've only gotten to read a few pages... but I'm HOOKED! As soon as these kids of mine are in bed, I'm putting a do not disturb sign on my forehead for the rest of the night. This book is calling my name. :)
ReplyDeleteI started last night, and it's good. Aside from the entertainment it's giving me, I really like the cleaning tips. Pretty interesting :-)
ReplyDeleteCandace, when I read the book that was also one of the things I was shocked by. I didn't realize that people were still basically being used as slaves. It just saddens me to see people treat others like they aren't human beings.
ReplyDeleteWhen you guys finish the book I would love to know which character is your favorite. Mine is Minny for reasons I can't discuss yet. :)
I'm dying to know what that woman did to that pie!!!
ReplyDeleteBonnie.. Me too!!! And as I'm reading, Minny just keeps on referring to it, so I can't wait until that finally comes out! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd Tempie, that is so funny that you said that, because when I posted this today, I was thinking the same thing, about wanting to know who was each person's favorite character and why! I have such a soft spot for Aibileen right now, well, I have the whole time, because I just think she's such an amazing lady. I love how kind and good hearted she is and I love the way she is with little Mae Mobley. And that Miss Lefolt!!!! AAAAHHHHHH... I just want to SLAP her most of the time! Can we say.. WORST MOTHER OF THE YEAR!?!?!?!?! That sweet Aibileen is raising that precious little girl all on her own and I think she's just amazing for it! :)
OOOPs! :)
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I agree about the cleaning tips, I was thinking I need to be writing those things down! LOL
And Erica, the voices are so perfect. This book just couldn't get any better!
Oh.My.Gosh! I am so stuck in this book. All my kids get neglected when I get a new book, I'll be sure to blame you guys and this blog.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I am loving Skeeter! Am I the only one that really sympathizes with her? It just tugs at my heart strings, all the turmoil in her. Man her friends are total turds! Anyway, I can't wait to hear what you guys think.
Skeeter is my favorite too! And I'm dying to know what ends up happening to Constantine. I'm betting it has something to do with Skeeter's dad. He must be having an affair with her. A red flag went up when he gave her that extra dollar.
ReplyDeleteI'm also dying to know how it turns out with Minny when Mr.Johnny came home and she hid in the guest bathroom. I haven't gotten back to her, so can't wait for that. Plus, Ms. Celia is mysterious as well. She must be trying to have babies and keeps losing them...poor girl :(
I totally think that Constantine is Skeeter's mom! Don't you think so? With all that talk about her hair and how she just doesn't fit in with the family and how comfortable she was at Constantine's house. I think Skeeter's dad and Constantine had an affair and had her... gosh, I really need to finish this book so I can figure this all out!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry if I'm ruining this for anyone, just let me know if I need to stop talking about it.
Ok, I had to respond right away to that one, Bonnie....I could TOTALLY see that as a possibility. But, I wonder why skeeter's mom would be so accepting of her (well, kind of...)and would allow Constantine to stay around for so many years? That makes me kind of think that something must have happened while Skeeter was away at school.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I love speculating about possible outcomes too! I can stop talking about it too, if it's ruining it for others. But, I know you're all thinking the same thing :)
I love them all. I just can't put this book down! Last night while I was reading, I kept saying to myself, ok... as soon as the paragraphs break, I'm going to put it down... as soon as the chapter ends... as soon as the characters switch...
ReplyDeleteI ended up reading to pg. 250 last night! I have a feeling I may finish it today and if not definitely tomorrow.
I too LOVE Skeeter. I think she is so brave and I can see a lot of myself in her. I would've been the same way in those days.. thinking how ridiculous those laws were.
I have NEVER thought about her being Constantine's daughter! That is a really great insight. I am dying to know what happened with her and where she is and why she left. I hope that is revealed soon!
And NO!! You guys aren't ruining anything! This is all food for thought and this is what I love most about our little book club, that we can talk about what we're all reading at once! It's awesome! :)
