I've been dying to read this, so I picked it up this afternoon and read it in a matter of hours.
It is so amazing.
It's the story of a Baptist preacher in Texas who was involved in a very serious accident in which he was instantly killed. For 90 minutes he lay dead under a tarp at the accident site.
This book details his experience and the aftermath.
It's truly incredible. I highly recommend it.
I have to say, though, that books like this one and "The Shack" make me seriously reflect on my life and almost feel bad about myself. I am such a believer in Christ and I am the best person that I know how to be, however, I am not involved in a local church. I feel the most inspired and motivated by preachers such as Joel Osteen, who are uplifting and just amazing in their sermons and touch your soul with each one. The churches around here are old country churches with preachers that reflect the church. Very preachy, very old-fashioned and I just truly don't get a lot out of going to churches like that. I wish so much there was a church that I felt like fit my personality here where I live, because I would love to be involved and have my children involved in a church. I hope I don't go to hell for not being a faithful church go-er.

Candace, seriously you need to come try my church-- Temple Baptist! It is awesome, uplifting, and wonderful programs for the children!! Would love for you to join us one Sunday!!!

ReplyDeleteI don't think you should go to a church that you don't 100% believe in. That in and of itself would be hypocritical.
I hope that you find a place that you can 'belong' soon. Church friends and people who have the same values are such a strength in my life, and the lives of my family.
Until you find 'the one' church where you feel comfortable in, you're doing good by teaching your sweet babes about the Lord and his teachings. :)

ReplyDeleteThanks, Breezi, that means a lot coming from you, because I can tell you and your family have great values and relationships with church and family.
One thing that I miss about living in a large city is having a variety of options with churches. Here in the country, the choices are very limited and the churches I would be interested in attending are a good drive from here and being the only parent getting everything ready and going, I just don't have the motivation to drive a long distance early in the morning by myself to wrangle two kids. I should bite the bullet and do it.
Candace, I can so relate. I feel terrible for not having had my children regularly involved in a church. One of my big hangups with trying out a new church is the nursery workers. I hate leaving my kids with people I don't know. Luckily we have found a church here that we know a few people that go to it and the plus is a background check is run on anyone who works with the kids. We tried them out at Christmas and we really liked the vibe of the church. We have been hoping to try them out again but between snow and the weekends my husband works we haven't been able to, hopefully soon. I wish you luck with your search.
