The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

I've seen this book on the bestseller lists and the Barnes and Noble's table and recommended lists but didn't give it a try because I didn't think I'd like it....I was wrong :) And, I'm really glad I tried it. It's a light read and the characters are really lovable. But the thing that I loved the most about it was the history that winds through it. Set in the English Channel Islands just after the end of WWII, it deals with a lot of dark topics but it definitely isn't a dark book. I learned a lot about England during WWII and the German Occupation of Guernsey Islands. It doesn't read like a history lesson, though. If you're looking for quick read with a little bit of history, love, and lots of witty characters, this is your book :)

Oh, and it's written as a series of letters which is why I wasn't at first interested. But, I think that format really worked for this story. Enjoy!

  1. I read this book a few months ago with my other book club. The cool thing was we had our meeting at a restaurant and the chef there actually made us a Potato Peel Pie. When he served it he said it was edible but he wouldn't recommend eating it. Some of the ladies did try it and they said it wasn't bad. I thought that was pretty cool of him. Anyway, I liked this book. As I was reading it, it made me want to read some of the books that was mentioned, esp. Wuthering Heights. I have since downloaded it to my Kindle but that is as far as I have gotten.

  2. I have this one on my wish list at PBS. I've been seeing it at B&N too, but the honest to goodness reason I haven't been motivated to pick it up yet is because my grandma read it last year and I was like.... I don't wanna read a GRANDMA book! ha! ;)

It is on my wishlist, so I will read it at some point...

  4. I wouldn't have read this book on my own either... my sister had it and I only read it because she kept laughing out loud as she read it. It was such a cute book! I love it when a little history is thrown in -- then I don't feel guilty for ignoring my life to read beause I was "learning" stuff!!! :)
